Its a tough gig for the Perth amateur league players of La Fiamma. They travel over 12,000kms per season and the away games this year were vital in trying to stay up. Unfortunately it came down to the final game of the season and it was completely out of our hands. The lads gathered at one of the players house and awaited the updates as they came through. In the final game, Brooklands were required to beat Ahly FC for La Fiamma to stay up. Ahly struck first and the mood became even more sombre as the news sunk in. Not even a draw could save us. Time passed and finally someone yelled out that Brooklands had drawn level. In the next tense 15 mins came another cry that Brooklands had scored again! Could Ahly draw level? Were we through? With only minutes to go in the game came the news that Brooklands had scored again. We were surely safe now and the mood of everyone present had changed immediately. When the final whistle had blown the boys had finally realised the job was done. We had survived and we now could look forward to doing it all again in the same league next year. This time with a bit more excitement at the prospects next year would bring!
